Welcome! New Faculty : Prof. Samiran Mandal

A warm welcome and lots of good wishes on becoming part of our Centre!

Prof. Samiran Mandal joined as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in June 2022. Samiran holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics from the Bankura Christian College affiliated with the University of Burdwan, M.Sc. (Mathematical Sciences) from the School of Basic Sciences (SBS), IIT Bhubaneswar, and earned his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences (SEOCS), IIT Bhubaneswar, India. He was a Project Associate at SEOCS, IIT Bhubaneswar briefly, following which, he joined as an Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Ocean Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Bombay before joining IIT Delhi. Samiran is the recipient of multiple best paper presentation awards and international travel grants, which includes winning the Young Researchers’ Award twice from the Ocean Society of India, DST-SERB, and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Samiran’s broad interest lies in exploring the physical and dynamical processes of the upper ocean at multiple spatio-temporal scales (from tidal to interannual and sub-mesoscale to mesoscales) to investigate the coastal and open ocean processes in the Northern Indian Ocean and within the Maritime Continents. Samiran’s research interests particularly include investigating the tides and tidal current hydrodynamics in the Gulfs and coastal ocean along the Indian coast, understanding the mesoscale and sub-mesoscale oceanic processes within the water column associated with circulation patterns and eddies in the northern Indian Ocean, and the upper oceanic response to the tropical cyclones from multiple observation platforms, especially the High-Frequency Radars (HFR) and model outputs. On the basin scale, Samiran is working on investigating the surface and subsurface marine heatwaves in the northern Indian Ocean to relate them to the boundary currents (East India Coastal Currents), tropical cyclones, and marine productivity.
