Description
"My work focuses on understanding complex urban environments through the lens of environmental acoustics and data-driven analysis. I study traffic noise in cities, aiming to move beyond overall sound levels toward a clearer understanding of the different sources and processes that shape the urban soundscape. This involves combining field measurements with computational approaches to interpret how diverse and overlapping activities contribute to what we hear in real-world conditions, including acoustic source characterization and frequency-resolved (spectral) analysis. More broadly, I am interested in how environmental data can be used to extract meaningful patterns from complex systems. My work sits at the intersection of acoustics, atmospheric science, and statistical modeling, where I explore ways to translate raw measurements into physically interpretable insights. I also examine connections between noise and other environmental challenges, such as air pollution, particularly in terms of shared sources and mixed signals. My research further focuses on developing scalable approaches for data-rich but unstructured environments, where traditional methods often fall short. This includes the use of modern statistical and machine learning techniques, while maintaining a strong emphasis on physical reasoning and interpretability. I also work with low-cost sensing systems, calibrated against reference-grade instruments, to enable more accessible and scalable environmental monitoring. Overall, my goal is to contribute to a more integrated understanding of urban environmental systems, with relevance for sustainable urban planning, public health, and evidence-based policy."
